This picture is a 1929 version. The Farmall Regular was the first all-purpose tractor made by the company. Initially it was simply called the "Farmall", and it wasn't until 1931 that they started calling it the "Farmall Regular". |

Has a picture of a old metal wheeled tractor. says farmall on the tractor and a stamp of mccormick deering and a little more writing that I can t make out. It has three numbers and a letter stamped on it. 998 B. Does anyone know anything about this. Its made of something thats not steel. Magnet won t stick to. Heavy.

We restored it in the early 60s and my Dad sold it in the early 90s but I don t know who. It was still running at that time. My brother Ron, Dad and I had a lot of good times in on the rebuild.

My father also bought a Farmall or Regular which is what they were called after the F-30 and F-20 made the scene . Bucking broncos is what they were. Lots of power in low gear as long as they had traction. You really couldn t stop them in the field. The thing I remember most, never pop the clutch. Those drive gears would walk the thing right over on top of you. Also, in the the evening driving the regular , the flame would really shoot out of that bell muffler . My father, later bought a newer F-20 and parted out both the Farmall and older F-20. I still have a few part such as engine canopy and aircleaner assembly.
Kyle wrote on Thursday, August 16, 2007 (PDT):there was no paint code for regulars. The paint was navy surplus from WW1. There were hundreds of suppliers, and no specs for paint on those ships other than grey . So the regulars were everything from almost white to black with all hues, tints, and shades in between. I have personnally seen the blue regular, and it has been explained as weathering of the grey paint supplied by the DuPont people circa 1914-1917. My Regular was purchased new in 1929,by my grandfather. It still runs like a top, and is all ORIGINAL! Some great sources of info on these old ones is the nebraska tractor tests. I found out alot from visiting old folks homes,retirement centers, and quiering the retired farmers. Theres lots of books on them too!

Lester D. Bausch wrote on Saturday, September 16, 2006 (PDT): I have no idea as to when We aquired our "Regular" but it was the first tractor my Dad had on our farm. I beleive he bought it on steel and converted it to rubber. I remember he was comming back to the house going through some native grass land and hit a tree stump and knocked the front end out from under it. We bought an old junked "Regular" and used the front end. Eventually we only used it to cultivate corn, sometime having to pull it to get it started. We finaly had to quit using it in about 1962.

I can find no serial number plate, but the cast number on the clutch housing is 1479D, and I found on the front of engine a number 1565 DA, on the rail in front of the radiator I found the number 63776. Any help with this would be appreciated. I am also looking for steel wheels for the front, It has steel on the rear and has been modified by cutting the steel wheels off and welding trailer rims in their place.Motor is froze but everything else is there.The pto engages in the forward position if this helps in finding out the correct year.Any photo's and places for manuals,parts,and decals would behelpful as this is my first attemp at restoration of farm equipment.

The next turn on the crank was a devastating blow to my mouth from the crank handle resulting in splintering and shattering my 2 front teeth up into the roof of my mouth.. So my memeories of a Farmall Regular are very vivid, although not pleasant, I'm now 62, so it's been several yrs ago.. be careful !!

We had mounted lister, cultivator and converted from steel to rubber how ever we had steel also. A real workhorse but nothing by today's standard. Traded it in on new Ford/Ferguson in 1946.

Someone stole the magneta and it hasn't run since. It hadn't run since the 50's but it would still turn over in the early 80's. It has since stuck. It would be good to at least get it running, which I think could be done without too much trouble. I live in upstate SC.

The steering gears in the front are open, and it has cables that run down the frame that connect to the brakes? I think that it had steel wheels that were cut down and welded to rims with rubber. How does one find out weather the tractor is a Reg, F12, F14, or F20. An earlier post said the open steering box is a dead givaway. Are their any letters in the serial number that will verify the type of tractor?

Jimmy King wrote on Saturday, March 01, 2003 (PST):I am 61 my dad was born in nov1914 My Granddad bought his first tractor new in 1929 it was a regular farmall I have heard dad tell about going on the other side of town about a mile & ahalf to his uncle's farm to plow proabley a direct hitch 3 disc plow. Granddad traded this tractor in 1939 for a model H. I have a friend whose dad bought a regular about the same time granddad did. each one always they bought the first sold in Greene Co. Mo. my friend still has his and uses it to plow his garden each year.

The International data book I have indicates 402 tractors built before 1928 with housing 1556-DC, mines DB, the same book says the front bolster 1556-DD before August 1928, mines DC, I need help... I have a "36 F-20 (missing the S/N tag)the frame # and engine #'s match, I haven't found a frame # on this tractor.

One good way to tell a regular, on the on the end of the steering shaft is an open gear. The later f-21 had an enclosed gear box. Also the tranny is a 3 speed. On ours, the magneto hsfd as little gear called a kick gear. If that was in th up position when you cranked, you might go over the moon. Hope this helps you identify the tractor, but surely by now you have had several responses. I have no idea what one is worth, I guess the buyer decides that!! Good Luck. Joe
Leonard J. Rahilly wrote on Friday, July 12, 2002 (PDT):I used to use a "Regular" Farmall that belonged to a neighbor. It was on 36" rubber, and except for the lack of the extra gear, it performed very much like the F-20 that I also used back then (early 40s). The Nebraska test is deceptive, because the earliest Farmall had a 1" carburetor opening. Later models had 1-1/4", the same as the F-20. The carb and manifold were different, but I believe that the developed horsepower was very similar for both tractors after the carb change. I do not believe that IHC ever called this tractor "Regular." Everybody else did, of course. You'd hear this; "Well, she ain't a F-20, she's jist a reg'ler Farmall." I have some old catalogs from parts suppliers, and they refer to the tractor as "Regular." Still, I have only seen "the original Farmall" or "the Farmall" in International sales brochures or advertisements in farm magazines from the 30s. This tractor and the F-20 were so common that many modifications were made to them. It was possible to buy overdrive transmissions, to double the speed, variable governor kits, a brake handle for the right side, foot brakes, and gasoline manifolds. This is one reason why people like Ertl make some royal booboos in their models of these tractors. I'd guess they go out and find a "restored" tractor, but don't know enough about it to realize that the governor has been changed, the manifold is not original, or a magneto other than the original type has been put on after the E4A or F-4 has bitten the dust. Oh, well!

r hughes wrote on Sunday, September 24, 2000 (PDT): I own a Regular. The unit was sold to me as a 29, but I believe it is a 31. It is totaly origional even the paint howeaver it has been placed on round spoked rubber tire's--36inch rear--16inch front. It still runs & drives great. The decals on the rear axel's are yellow & black not white & black. I also happen to have a complete extra air intake stack & all for same.--R
Eric Schwartz wrote on Friday, August 11, 2000 (PDT):I bout a Farmall Regular in real ruph condishion plugs was out of the motor for years.It took 3days for me and my buddys to unseez the motor.Im still looking for someone tocut the valve seals.This tractor has ben hard and exspensive to find parts for Im still looking for rims and tires 12/36.I also do antique tractor pulling with an ALLICE-CHOMERS B and my buddy Chester Lee pulls a John Deer 630 and a Olover Super 88.I cant wait to see wat this Farmall Regular can do on a stone bote pull.

Bruce wrote on Sunday, December 26, 1999 (PST):Chas Wendell published a history of IH, and I think its still available from stemgas publishing. I have a regular, unrestored, on rubber. I don'y know the year, because the tag is gone. I'd appreciate help dating it, if possible. It isn't the early 1923-24-25 style, but doesn't have the latest style governor. Does that make it 1926-1930? probably so. I'd appreciate comments from any other regular owners out there, especially if you have any detailed knowledge of these interesting old tractors.

PAYMENT OF RENT WAS EFFECTED BY GIVING HALF OF THE CROPS TO THE LANDLORD SO TIMES WERE HARD . WE HAD A MOWER WHICH MOUNTED ON THE REAR DRAWBAR OF THE TRACTOR AS WELL AS A CORN CULTIVATOR WHICH MOUNTED ON THE REGULAR. AS I REMEMBER THE TRACTOR COULD BURN EITHER GASOLINE OR KEROSENE AS FUEL. IT PULLED A PAIR OF LITTLE GENIUS 14 INCH PLOWS IN SECOND AND THIRD GEAR DEPENDING ON THE CONDITION AND TYPE OF SOIL IN THE FIELD. WE ALSO PULLED A THREE GANG SPRING TOOTH HARROW WITH A PLANK DRAG TO LEVEL THE PLOUGHED GROUND. WHEN A THREE LAND HIGHWAY CUT OUR FARMLAND IN HALF WE HAD TO MOUNT THE TRACTOR WITH RUBBER TIRES 12 BY 36 ON THE REAR AND AUTOMOBILE STYLE ON THE FRONT. AFTER AN OVERHAUL JOB DURING WHICH THE MECHANIC FAILED TO PLACE COTTER PINS IN THE BOLTS OF THE PISTON RODS ONE OF THE PISTONS CAME LOOSE AND EXPLODED OUT OF THE SIDE OF THE ENGINE HOUSING. WE WERE ABLE TO WELD THE HOUSING AND GET THE TRACTOR RUNNING AGAIN. EVENTUALLY, IN THE LATE FORTIES WE TRADED UP TO A NEW FARMALL H FOR A MORE MODERN TRACTOR.
