Hi all; I'm in the same boat as larry- I need to get that hood off to get to the points so this baby will fire up! It's a '49 8N and the points haven't been replaced in about 15 years since my grandfather died, and it hasn't run in probably 10 years now. I rebuilt the carburetor and did the rest of the tune up and replaced the battery, and it cranks and it sputters, but won't run. Did remove and clean and refill the fuel tank before I tried (of course- why rebuild a carb then ruin it again?) Points are about all I can think of at this point, and I have a set, but I can't get the hood to tilt- do I have to remove it, or is it stuck?

I own a 1949 to-30 Ferguuson. the tractor is in good cond.I am working on it. it runs fine. but has leaked all thhe trans, rear end oil and hyddralic oil out of of it. i got it from my 99 year old uncle.motor runs good now has good and even comp..The shop manual I was told Says to to replace power lift unit with 80-90 wt. oil as well as trans fluid. It is the operating fluid for the entire system. I believe ! I should use hyd. fluid.for power lift unit but the 80or 90. would be used for trans. at rear end. but it seems the 80 wt, oil runs all though system. the tractor is all orignal.It has been garaged. since bought new any help on this. it has been parked in shed when not in use. has not been used. in years has done much terraceing in Maries co mo.many other implements with it also have ford flat head to restore or sell any help would be useful.but do't need smart ass answers.If youare found fooling with tractor at night you will be found there in morn.Thanks for helpful replys. As a youngster, I spent many hours on my dad's 8N. Although I have a 1900 diesel for work around the farm, I just couldn't resist and recently purchased a 51 model for restoration. It had the front bumper, headlights (working) rear work light and tail light, and good sheetmetal. Other than basic maintenance, ie, bushings and bearings, was in good condition. I'm am really looking forward to completing it and working an 8N again!

My grandfather had an 8N that he gave to my father. I learned to drive on this little tractor. We would drag fire wood in each year, and I have yet to see another tractor that will pull such a load for its size. Many times we would steer with the brakes because the front tires were barely on the ground. We found/manufactured steel wheels for it (that I now use on another tractor) and after putting in a radiator guard, and attaching a 5 foot bush hog, it would mow down anything smaller than your wrist. I LOVED that little tractor!

I have a 1947 8N tractor, and I love it! I am going to start restoring it this winter. I was thinking about changing it over to a 12 volt system is there any advantage in this change. My tractor is still has a 6 volt system and it works great. Other than the leaking seals in the back wheels and no brakes, it runs great. I use it for brush hogging, finish mowing, box blading and I even have a scoop for the three point and a boom pole. Its a little work horse, I don't know what I'd do with out it. Andrew Gazdecki, the Serial Number tag on the left side of the engine can be hard to read. If the numbers can't be read with the eye, you can brush on a mild sulfuric acid to melt away what's hiding the number. Even if it's been ground off a little this'll usually make it ledgible. The tractor has been overhauled several times and is still owned and used by my father. I also purchased a 1952 8N in 1974 and have used it since, but not so much. It had only 1500 hours when purchased and was overhauled at the time. It now has roughly 2200 hours and still runs great. I have fond memories of the 8N.

I have a 1948 Ford 8N which never ceases to amaze me in its performance beyond my expectations. I have acquired a loader which I was told can go on the front of the tractor, but it needs the hardware necessary to actually attach it to the front and rear axles. It looks to be a Deerborn model 19, but I don't know for certain. A brief description; a tube structure that seconds as the hydralic reservoir for the pump, which is drive off the front of the tractor. There are three holes in a bracket that do not line up with anything on the front of the tractor and the back part of the frame work (that part that would be closest to the driver's seat) has an open ended box-like structure with a hole on the inside of the box. The box would be open towards the ground when mounted on the tractor. Can someone tell me where I might get the hardware to affix the loader to the tractor? I was told I will have to remove the fenders of the tractor first if that helps. Thanks.

I have a 1948 8N and I have restored back to original as can be expected. The tractor runs and looks like new (started right off the bat at minus 20F.) but I did had some problems with the 3 pt hitch last winter when it got cold out about 30 degrees I decided to put my rear blade on it and the draw bar links would not go up or down due to the old probabaly the original oil in the tranmission system. What is the cause for this is they oil to thick or is there some problem the hydro? It worked great this summer but winter is quickly approaching. What oil should be used? and what volcity?

To answer Dale Donohue question,that is not the serial number . The serial number is found on the left side of the engine ona plate.The nubers might not show up be cause of dirt so you might have to clean that area off.

josh try loosing one of the hose conections to bleed the air out of the system. once you get fluid out of the conectin tighten it back down anb it should work. did on mine anyway.

I have a 1951 Ford 8N with a front bucket loader. Unfortunately I am unable to get the loader to work. The pump was recently rebuilt and the hoses appear to be fine. There is plenty of hydraulic fluid in the resevoir; the first thing I did was to toppe it off. The system strains when I attempt to engage it, but the the cylinders just don't move. Does anyone have any thoughts on the subject? Thanks

Dale, the serial number for your 8N can be found on the left-hand side of the engine. It should start with an "8N". If it is an 8N that has had the engine swapped out with a 9N, the serial number may start with "9N". If your engine is dirty you might have to do a little cleaning to find the serial number.
