  • I am restoring a 1953 Cockshutt 40. I need an engine block. It is a B230 buda gas engine. I have collected 6 engines so far and upon dismantling then have found cracks either between the sleeves in the center where the metal is thin or in the metal anchoring the head bolts nearest to the sleeve wall where the metal between the threaded hole and the sleeve wall is also thin. Each block has at least one to three such cracks and they seem to appear mostly at front or back cylinder. As a result of this effort I have a accumulated a significant supply of related parts... heads..rockers..flywheels,ring gears, camshafts, crankshafts timming gears, governor parts, distributors etc...anyone interested in parts Anyone willing to trade all this for a gauranteed block...By the way the blocks I ve collected so far generally appear to have good water jackets ,sleeve sealing surfaces, and are externally sound..Ideas re repair and sources are most welcome. sig pfahl 1-204-866-3259

  • Oh, what memories the pictures and stories bring back! I was a young boy on an Oregon farm when by dad bought a Coop E4 about 1951, 1952(?). It was unique for its time, bought to replace a steel-wheeled Case Model L. We used it to pull 3-16" MM plow, harrows, rollers, disks, etc. Also, the live PTO was the first available, along with two creeper gears. We used the Coop to drive a Gehl field chopper, putting up silage. To be sure, it had its problems. To name a few; Repeated broken front spindles (at the L), unreliable hydraulic couplers for remote cylinder, transmission issues with a the shifter fork. But, the 6 cyclinder Buda engine (very new to the industry, competing with 4 cylinder Case, 2 cylinder John Deere R tractors -- "engine runs too fast, too many cylinders, ..."), was very strong, very reliable. It would purrrrr like a kitten in the field under load, able to be heard for long distances across open fields. We made some modifications, such as a step platform in the rear to aid in getting on/off, and splitting the rear wheel rims, adding 2", for better traction (used 13X38 tires, I think). The marketing and support for these tractors was terrible. The dealership was a local coop, with little shop experience, parts, or support. Very few were sold in the area, and the line died out in a few years.

  • I have a Cockshutt 40 diesel with the Buda 6 cylinder engine. It was siezed when I bought it 2 years ago. I have stripped down the engine completely. I have had problems getting sleeves. 4 of them were badly pitted. All other parts are available. Hope to have it running by next summer.
