My grandpa s 1936 Model D serial# 125652 is currently sitting in a tree row on a farm south of Goodland, KS where we parked in it 1969 with still 3 of the original 4 tires on the tractor. On March 18, 1936, he traded an earlier model D serial# 32207 with steel wheels, for the 36 D with rubber tires. The sticker price for the new 36 D was 1490.00, including new wheel weights too, and they gave him 300 trade-in price for the older D. How do I know this I m sitting here now holding the original bill of sale from March 1936. Somehow, my family has perserved this document all these years. Amazing, eh I love old JD s and I love reading all the stories and comments on this website.

I would love to track down the D that my father owned. My grandfather used to plow with it when I was a little tike and I would fall asleep on the rear gear cover from the warmth and vibration. I ran it in the 60 s when I was a teenager pulling 5 bottoms in a two plow tandem rig my dad fabricated. Ah the memories. Last I knew it got traded for an AC WD45 in the late 60 s at dealer in Somonauk, IL. It was unstyled, late 20 s/early 30 s I think solid flywheel, 2 speed trans. It was on rubber with cement poured into the rear wheels for weight. Any suggestions on how to find this old friend would be gratly appreciated.

A used 1928 model D was the first tractor my dad owned. It had steel wheels which he had converted to rubber tires. It's bigest drawback was the fact that it had only two forward speeds. He bought another, styled, model D in the mid 40s which had more power (38 drawbar hp) and three speeds forward. It served us well but my dad always wanted more power so he traded it for a new 1949 WD-9 International diesel.

I have owned D 103264 for 38 years, also have 131396 & 131407, these two were built the same day that I was born. My most famous D is 131570, It was painted 'Gold LEAF' for the 100 year anniversary of John Deere making his first plow in 1837. My two 1953 Streeters are 191654 & 191661.

Dad had a D of similar vintage but on steel, which sat on the old family farm for many year's. A good friend of his helped us to get it going again after Dad passed away, and this gentelman celebrated his 80'th birthday by driving this old D in our towns centennial celebration, that same year. Thank's again Mr J.Fehr Plum Coulee Manitoba Canada, for all the help and support to our family. And mostly for being the true friend you always were, to our Dad. As a teenager in the 60' I found a rusted up 1935 John Deere D out in somebodies woods attached to a old sawmill. I managed to talk the owner out of it for $35. I and another guy managed to get it to run and I had a lot of fun popping around the farm on it. Sold it in 69 for $50 so I could use the money to buy books for college. Sigh, wish I had kept it. A warning to youthful owners is to not try speed shifting the thing, you can really jam the gear works doing that.

My father bought his first tractor in 1942, a unstyled 1935 John Deere D. It had steel wheels and two forward gears. The next year, he bought a 1943 Styled John Deere D, again on steel wheels. This tractor had three forward gears and was faster than the older one. This is the first tractor I ever drove, at age five. My father had to keep from over tightening the clutch so that I could drive it from one place to another. I was not allowed to pull anything until I was about nine years old.

The Carb. is a DLTX 3.[ this came on the tractor, as it should]This carb. had a elbow fitting sodered on the carb where the fuel line connected to this fitting.THIS IS INCORRECT. First tractor I ever drove, the D, nothing would stop it,I had to stop at the end of the field and turn the wheels and then start again,was a promblem turning around until I got stronger.once some custom cutters was cutting wheat they were told to stay out of the low spot, and they didnt they came and took our JD 70/and the ford tractor/ got them stuck also/as they dint know how to start the D,they came to town and got me. I went and started the D, and then hooked on to the ford,that was chained to the 70 that was chained to the combine,and then pulled the whole mess out !

My Pop had a 1948 D. It was the best plowing tractor i ever operated. Our farm was in Mapleton, North Dakota, in the Red River Valley. Black Loam soil. Pulled a 4 bottom plow at , if I remember about 4 MPH. Covered a lot of ground in a day. This was my favorite tractor. This was in the late 50's early 60's.

I would work all day out in the field doing summerfallow in ND starting when I was 10 years old and not big enough to turn the flywheel and start the tractor. Here in the Highlands of Scotland we have a 1946 "D" petrol/kerosene bought new, it was used until 1965 as a ploughing tractor. All the local farmers bought tractors with rear likages in the 50's but my grandfather never saw the point of changing a system which worked so well, it was only when tax free diesel came in that he changed his mind.We restored it in 1991 and she goes to the local ploughing match.

I was almost raised on a D. First tractor I ever drove. I have a picture of me on it as a baby. It had the spoke flywheel and it was on steel but my dad changed it over to rubber. A couple of years after it was traded off for an A, I found out from the dealer that he had let some one use it for running a silage cutter at the silo in the fall and they had water in i and one nigght it froze hard enough, forgot to drain it and cracked the block. Like a dummy, I didn't but it right then, and probably could have for a song. Been sick about it ever since these old tractors have been such a collector item. Dad bought a 10-year old 1947 D in Hillsboro, Oregon. The dealer drove it 10 miles to our farm but emptied the tank before he got there. Top speed was less than 5 MPH. He laughed until we saw how that big JD would pull an 8' wide tandem disk, set full cut, uphill in top gear. These had a multiple-fuel system that could run gas or diesel. When burning diesel, you could turn on a water injector that pulled from the radiator. Wonderful old machines!

My dad andi restored a 1928 D In 1982 and it runs well.We have other John Deere two cylinder tractors and enjoy useing them around the farm. I use all John Deere tractors from an 8630 down to an A. Guys don't paint your pullys yellow it looks goddy.

My dad has a large collection of john deere tractors. he goes out west every year buying tractors.he buys them and I work on them, because he doesnt know how to work on them.I love the sound of a old john deere tractor running, its music to my ears.I think the old john deere 2 cilinder tractors are so simple to work on, I just wish most things were that easy.If any one out there is looking for a certain john deere tractor, my Dad seems to be able to find them.As for a D I feel that they are one of the easyier ones to work on except for having to pull the radiator!!The D has the gutsyist soud of all the john deere tractors in my opinion

My dad was a JD dealer in Wheatland, Wyoming for 20+ years. There was a farmer between Slater and Chugwater that had bought a kit to hook two D's together. The seat was removed from the front one and the front end from the rear. The front end then attched to the front tractor where the seat had been. The clutches and throttles were operated seperately from the rear by a linkage arrangement of some type. Steering was done with the front tractor by using a hydraulic power steering kit. Quite an operation to get it all installed, but once it was up and running it would pull like all get out. Has anyone out there seen any kits like this? Just curious.
