Antique International / Farmall Tractor: International 300 Utility

[Return to the Shed]

This was International Harvester's first utility-type tractor. It is basically the same as the Farmall 300, but with a higher RPM rated engine. It was low to the ground and easy to maneuver.

  • Dear Bill Gaul; The 300 U had two manual steering boxes that were standard on that tractor. mine was broke when I bought it and I had to replace it. The one earlier model had a bad steering box and International replaced it with a better one. They are hard to find but you might try the tractor grave yards on line. One I would suggest is McFaddens in Sharon Springs, N.Y.

As long as they aren t rusted out, I can use them. Think I have the same problem with the valve as another commenter, in that one valve has stuck due to the water flowing down the exhaust pipe! Will try to fix that valve and get her running. Have a front loader many welds on it, but functional for the 300 I would part with I have a Kubota for that work for a mere 500. It will need a ram for the bucket, and is a power up, gravity down system, but she works! Thanks and love these old tractors!!

The Torque Amplifier requires more fluid in the main gearbox fill (sitting on the tractor, large 3/4" square drive to the left of the stick shift). It draws from the same gearbox. The gear box capacity with the TA is 7 gallons.

I was told by one salvage yard to find an IH715 combine and take all the hydrostatic steering components and put them on my tractor. Basically a servo control under the steering wheel (old gear box and linkages get removed)and you mount a hyd.ram on the front. Anyone done this, or seen it done.

Look at the sales, auction sights linked to this web-sight, also auctions and local I.H. dealer trade-ins. GREG; the only thing rare about the tractor is the fact that the TA is still working. Most no longer work, but tractor is not affected by lack of working TA, they still will run forever. Just be ready to give it plenty to drink, they burn alot of gas. About the loader, not sure, think it's the I.H. model 3000 see some entries above in this column. Many questions will be answered.

  • Chuck.........if it still has a 6 volt battery, the left side is the positive side and that gets hooked up to the negative post on the battery. 6 volt batteries are installed in reverse. Positive post of the battery gets hooked up to the ground on the right side. On the right side of the tractor you will find a number on the side of the engine, Example; 5-14-A. That means it was made on May 14. The tractor serial number is on the right side on a plate attached to the clutch housing and will be a four digit number, like 6855. The engine serial number is located on the right side of the engine crankcase and will look something like C-169-22713. The C-169 means it is a carburated engine with a 169 cubic inch piston displacement. Hope this helps.

  • My father needed help with his International 300 with 3-pt. hitch and PTO. Hydraulic oil was leaking into the crankcase so I pulled the pump and replaced the front seal (just behind the helix drive gear. The pump is attached to the right side of the engine case, just below the generator. The distributor attaches and is driven from the hyd. pump. The hydraulics for the 3pt. hitch worked last year but now they don't. I only changed the front seal and put everything back together correctly. It seems we get no pressure from the pump. The hydraulics worked last year and I wonder if the pump is the problem or is it the control valve located on the right side of the hyd. oil tank next to the right fender. The tank is below the driver seat. I found a bleed screw on top of the pump and tried to fill it when stopped and also when running to bleed the system. No luck. There was a spring under the bleed screw, not sure why. The manual does not have any good illustrations of the system. There are two small pipe plugs on the tank, near where the solid supply and return lines to the pump attach, but I don't know which is which - I assume these are for attaching a pressure guage for troubleshooting. I suspect the control valve has a relief valve internal, but not sure. If the pressure relief is open then that is probably why I have no pressure. But like Dad says, "It worked before." If anyone has any suggestions please email me. I was real careful to do everything right and the hydraulic oil reservoir is full. I just do not know why the hydraulics aren't working. The control valve 'feels' normal as you can lift and lower the handle into the up, down, and center positions. Please help. Thanks.

The serial number if you can make it out is stamped on the nameplate located on the right side of the clutch housing. Numbers 501 to 20218 were made in 1955. Numbers 20219 to 33064 were made in 1956. We have rebuilt the motor with pistons, rings, and seal kits. We still have a ways to go to finish. We find that the steering is loose and the hydraulics have a grinding noise but still work. I plan to finish the rest of the repairs to make everything operational and then paint it. I still need some quick hitch parts, and a front grill in good shape if anyone has any comments or suggestions I would appreciate hearing them. Bruce McIntosh

After pulling the head repairing the valve problem and replacing a push rod I am grinning from ear to ear. Installed a flapper on the exhaust to keep the rain out of the engine which was the cause for the valve problem. The coffee can aperiently had not been on the exhaust the whole time it had rested. Now all I need is the LINK on the left hand side of the 3 point hitch that attaches the lift arm to torsion bar. Seems that this link must have been broken at some time in its life and has a make shift affair in place of it. Any help locating this piece or what this piece is called due to the fact that I know nothing about tractors would be greatly appreciated. THANX
