Produced from 1954 through 1958, Oliver management tried to make the Super 55 look and sit like a Ford after the extreme success of Ford's Model 8N tractor. It featured a 3-point hitch and a 144 CID four-cylinder Oliver engine. |

I purchased my own last summer and it is in excellent running condition. I will need a new back wheel rim as it is rusted. 13 inch wide, so if anyone has a single or a pair let me know. We are going on a 50 mile cruise, benefits local charities and high schools in Ripon, WI this coming Saturday 24 August so will hopefully have a good ride. Also missing a cover plate just beneath the steering wheel on hood housing. Would like to restore but it will take time. steve

I am going to start to restore and need the lid on left foot tool compartment and the front hood emblem. I have a straight pipe on it and it really sounds great. I have purchased a 1955 John Deere two cylinder gas that has been restored. Someday I will park both under the tree and drink tea. It just don t get any better. Me and the Oliver bush hog the field three times a year. Just like the quite.

There is a lift cable on the left side of the mower with a yoke/clevis type hook up. Dean wrote on Sunday, April 05, 2009 (PDT):I just bought a nice Oliver super 55 at the local spring farm auction. It s in very good shape but I can t figure out how to engage the PTO. I can t find a lever or anything anywhere on it. The shaft spins when the tractor is running but you can stop it easily. It doesn make any bad noises or feel bad when you do. Am I just not seeing it or did I buy one that has problems Thanks.

Jason Muchow wrote on Tuesday, March 25, 2008 (PDT):Just bought a 56 model 55 from my father-inlaw. I got a set of three bottom plows, discs,boom pole, and a road scraping blade all for 800. The tractor runs great with no smoke and has already been converted to 12V. All it needs is a good cleaning and some TLC. No rust and everything works great. I am looking for a steering box to replace the current wore out unit in mine. Any leads would be appreciated.

Next year I want to pull both tractors. It will be interesting to see the difference in gas and diesel, and, firestone and good year tires.

BUT the loader Hyd. and the three point hyd. sort of loose altitude after the equipment is used for a short time. Connects lever beside the seat to the arm in front of the brake pedals. Also, why wouldn't it shift from one half of the gears to the other half? Thanks for any help.

John Doughty wrote on Thursday, May 05, 2005 (PDT):Sounds like everyone has the same problems, finding parts for their super 55. I am looking for the center grill piece and the PTO guard. Plus I am looking for some one who is willing to talk about what the tractor is worth today. Not that I want to sell it. Seems like no one wants to talk worth, but they really want to buy it. I have put in several of these comments on other sites with no success. I'm like all the rest of you. Its a great tractor and I have several dollars wrapped up in it on restore and have enjoyed taking it to shows, just to have someone say. Why did you paint that Ford green? Reflects that I don't live in Oliver country. If some one knows please contact me, and good luck on finding parts. One other comment. I recently converted my super 55 to 12v with the help of the artical in Yesterdays tractor, it was a sinch and the best thing I could have done to it. Thanks JD.

I used it primarily for road maintenance here in northern WI. Would fire right up in minus 20 degree weather. A real workhorse.

I replaced most of the bearings and seals and am in the process of repairing a crack (freeze damage) in the hydraulic resevior. I have always wanted a Ford 8 or 9 N but settled for this old boy and now I am glad I did. Anyone looking for parts should try Tom at Farmersville Equiptment in Ephrata Pa, 1-717-354-2150. Kent Dacke wrote on Friday, October 17, 2003 (PDT):I was looking for a tractor with a loader when I found (stumbled) onto my Super 55. It was a late 1958. It came with optional power steering, front and rear hydrolics with fluid control and of course an Oliver loader. I improved the iginition system by replacing the coil, points and condensor by installing electronic igintion from Genessee Products for less than $100.00. I highly recommend doing this to any point operated machine. It now saves the starter motor and a few choice words. I now only have to touch the iginition switch to fire up the engine... without using the choke! The kit comes complete with easy to follow instructions and high output coil that looks stock and mounts where the original mounted. The module and magnetic pick up are concelled in the distributor. It took less than thirty minuets to install. No one would ever know until they saw the extra wire... and then probably would never make the connection that it was converted. Yes, I love my 55. Ford 8 and 9N owners come over to drool. But there is no compairson between the two. I do need a replacement dampner for the "Easy Ride" seat if anyone can help. We have been using this tractor to move hay bales and run a brush hog to keep the place up around here. The only work we have done to it is the 12 volt conversion and adjusted the clutch. Ron Parry wrote on Wednesday, December 11, 2002 (PST):My father and Oliver dealer from 1956 until he retired in 1978, saw to it that I had a way to pay my through college. He purchased a Super 55 D put a side mower on it and got a contract from the state of Pa. to mow road banks. So from 1964 to 1968 I spent every day each summer, mowing roads. That old 55 used and average of 3 gallons of fuel every day and except for filters and changing the oil that was the total cost of maintaining the 55 for four years of running 8hrs a day each summer. PS I made 6.00 dollars per hr. I thought I was rich. I really wish I still had that old 55. He sold it after I graduated from college in 1969.

It has a Davis loader and in 1974 I added a small tubular frame backhoe. It has done a lot of work and only recently fell into disuse. I plan to replace the backhoe with a scraper to do light duty road maintenance. Trade backhoe for scraper anyone?

The other reason I love it is because my grandfather told me when I was about 10 years old (I'm 26 now) that it was mine when his time on earth was over. It runs great, spews the black stuff like the other guy wrote. I too need the paint schemes. The guy who bought it painted the entire tractor green...but not Oliver green.

It's a gas model and I'm pretty sure is a 57 year model.I've got lot's of stories I'd be glad to swap about this indestructable machine. I use it to shred the field ( couple acres)and blade the gravel lane and stuff.Also have an old hammer mill I drive off the pto for making compost out of leaves and debri.Good tractor and lot's of fun play with.

It had new paint, and all of the broken parts were replaced with new old stock or good used parts. I had to sell it and my Super 88 diesel to put a down payment on a house and set of barns that I always wanted. I feel like my right arm's been cut off now without my Olivers. Anyone know where I can buy some more like these to fix up again? That's half the fun of it!

In the late 50's (probably when it was showroom new) it was converted to propane and prior to me buying it, someone changed out the electrical system. It now runs with an alternator. Needless to say, its a great tractor. When I've needed parts, I've bought them from Gap Tractor Parts in Cranfills Gap, Texas and From Allis/White Tractor Dealerships in Texas. Boy are replacement parts pricey! One day (hopefully soon) I'm going to restore mine, which really consist of painting it. The majority of pictures I've seen show red wheel wells, so that's the color I'm going to paint them.

How I know this is that my dads uncle Jack Conner was the Oliver dealer in Bedford County and we were the first ones to buy a Super 55 in that county. Due to uncle Jacks INTEGRITY & HONESTY he had a really great business. We lived in a very heavily populated OLIVER area and uncle Jack sold 99.9% of all the OLIVERS that came into Bedford County plus all the implements that went with them. We are in the process of restoring our little Oliver at this time. I have either helped restore or started & finished several blue ribbon winners. Our super 55 was our main tractor for many years, until back in the mid 70's my uncle Bill purchased a diesel 1600. We still have both of them and since we have gotten away from farming we use them only to mow the old pasture and plow snow. They are both getting a well diserved rest now. They are like family and will probably be around as long as any of the family is alive. They were truely great tractors. A good friend of mine Lynwood Mearkle has about 10 or 12 Olivers. He is still farming and uses them today and they all look like they just unloaded them off the dealer delivery truck. He and his dad both bought tractors from uncle Jack. I will be more than happy to help anyone find parts or whole tractors should they want me to. I drive a cryogenics transport delivering nitrogen - oxygen & welding gasses and cover quite a bit of ground. I am constantly looking for antique cars ,trucks & farm equipment and of course tractors are at the top of the list. Let me know what parts you are in need of & let me see what I can come up with. Not all old tractors have to die & it's up to people like you & myself to see they don't. Thank You HOSS

It has been converted to 12 volt and has a Wagner Loader from a Ford on it. (Boy does that red-orange clash with the Oliver red!) These have been a big help to me in getting those hard to find parts. I found a shop manual from Intertec Publishing Corporation P.O. Box 12901 Overland Park, Ks. 66212. I have newer tractor to do the most of my work but i love my old oliver, it is in the process of a new paint job for shows at the present time, although im not shure of the color scheme will be original as it seems to be dificult to find out what the original was for sure.

I have found out from1954 to 1955the wheels are to be the same green as the tractor and from 56 to 58 they are red the only way you can get the red paint is to go to a paint mixing place and take a oliver toy tractor with you and they can macth it. But a hint is that massey ferg red is the closest paint to the original oliver red.

Tom wrote on Saturday, March 11, 2000 (PST):I bought a Super 55 Diesel from a friend 2 yrs ago for $1000. It had a knock in engine which finally blew! (#1) It broke at crank journal, som I disconnected rod cap and threw it in tool box. Pushed piston to top of cyl. and bolted pan back on. Been running it that way all year now. Can not even hear a miss. You would never know. I think it runs better then before! (LOL) Really. About paint on wheels, Oliver 55's came with Chinise red and green wheels. Not sure what differance is? Poss. year or gas / diesel? / STARTER; I have two diesel engines (one spare) the starter on one has a manual switch and thensplines on the starter rotor shaft are straight. On the other starter W/electric solenoid the rotor shaft splines are spriled. Both starters work on 55 diesel though. Hope that helps someone.

It has a bucket up front and looks good. I don't know where to find parts for the transmission or to tune it up. My father had one in mint condition which we used every day on a southwestern minnesota cattle/crop farm. The tractor had a front end loader with a hydraulic bucket. The hydraulic pump run off the front pto shaft of the tactor. The tractor moved snow and cleaned feed floors every day in the winter and pulled a 24T John Deere bailer over three cuttings of alfalfa and one cutting of straw every summer. Its good to see there are still some up and running!

I plan on restoring it later, but for right now I am using it around my property to move material. I have a back blade and a 3 point scoop for it. I will need to do some work on the steering and brakes soon! I read a lot about old tractors and for some reason fell in love with Olivers. I was looking in Washington State, but was lucky to find one here in British Columbia.
Grant Kelly wrote on Tuesday, May 25, 1999 (PDT):I have a Super 55 and use it every weekend. The only weird part is that when I bought it, somebody had replaced the original diesel motor with a Vauxhall engine. The bolt pattern was the same for some strange coincidence. It runs great but has no governor so keeping it going at a constant RPM is a bit tricky until you get the hang of it. I'd love to hear from other Super 55 owners.
