When I sold our dairy farm in 1983, the Oliver nearly sold, but my wife bid it back in. This tractor has been the best starting tractor on the place. It is nice to use for hauling manure, discing, raking hay, you name it. The power steering makes it easier to turn than the Farmall. We also have a 1650 for the jobs requiring more horse power.

I remember once in a while riding with him in the field he would tromp the brakes and pull it down. boy the black smoke rolled! he said it was good to blow the carbon out once in awhile. was a little cold blooded at times even with the preheater button. and the whine that s when I knew it wasa running good. can still hear it now in my mind. always sounded that way. great old tractor. dad said he drove the best and serviced the rest as he worked part time as a mechanic. massey and deere.
Robert Brown wrote on Monday, March 31, 2008 (PDT):I have never known an Oliver tractor to not whine while in motion. I grew up driving a 77 and thoutht all tractors whined like an Oliver. Even the later models whined. Maybe someone older than me or an Oliver expert can explain why they all do this. The best sound I remember is the whine got louder as the gear range got higher. This equates to the loudest it whined is when I was in road gear headed for the house.
jason marks wrote on Saturday, February 23, 2008 (PST):my dad has a 770 he bought 30 years ago at an auction. over the years we did everything short of restoring it. Henri i think your clutch problem could be because of a leaky rear main seal, because we found that when engine oil gets onto the clutch it becomes very sticky, especially when hot. and if anyone has trouble with rear end whine, it could be worn bearings, but it still would be safer to change the gear oil more often and also check your trans cover seals as well as the gear shift boot, because this allows water to get in and thus increase transmission wear. we use 80-90 gear lube in our tractors, but heavier or even synthetic oil will help as well.

Moody Richardson wrote on Saturday, April 21, 2007 (PDT):My dad and I owned two 770 s , A 1959 and a 1964. The first one had the Hydra Hitch and the second one had the power Traction hitch. The 64 model was a big improvement. Both ran very well and handled excellent as both were purchased new. The 59 had slow rearend and the 64 had the fast rearend. That 3rd gear at 41/4 miles per hour was a work horse with 3 - 14 semi mounted plow Red Gumbo Hill and a 10 - wheel disk and chain harrow in tandem. The six cyclinder was unbeatable on the PTO. Note; To plow, there must be 4-5 inches thread unscrewed on the left liftarm to enable the plow to perform corectly. Very Important In this era of time these tractors were unequaled for power and price. Cheaper than the 1600 but, just as much power. Also same goes compared to the 3010 JD, Cheaper but just as much power.

D. Bjorn Christian wrote on Tuesday, March 02, 2004 (PST):I grew up using a 770. When Dad bought it in '64 it was the second largest tractor in the area...the largest being an 880. I think back to all the things we did with that tractor and it amazes me that we didn't kill it! Tough old bugger it was! We used it for farming, logging, firewood hauling, snow removal, landscaping, gravel digging, and just about anything and everything else a tractor could be used for. Dad sold the farm and the tractor back in '94, and I stopped back for a visit two years ago. The tractor is still running, but it's in really rough shape now. The people who bought it really didn't take care of the tractor...or the farm for that matter.

How stable are the 770s? I have quite a hill that I started using the brush hog on, and everyone tells me "I wouldn't use that tractor on that hill." I haven't popped it on three wheels yet, but could use some advice. I really don't want to die. The guy before me used the 770 on this same terrain, but he didn't seem to have all his marbles. Are there any tricks to keeping them on the ground, or better ways to cut with them?

This tractor is in excellent condition. Recently painted. It has an after market 3 point with hydraulics and came with a grader blade. It also has the torque amplifier. The tractor is parade ready! I paid $2400 for the tractor. I didn't think this was a bad price considering its condition. Any thoughts on the price? I'm almost ashamed to work such a beautiful tractor in the fields. This tractor also has the whining in the gears or rear end. I'm glad to hear this is characteristic of the Oliver. Does anyone know who refurbishes the steering wheels? Also, is there a company that rebuilds the gauges? The tach is not working. I'm going to buy the owners manual and service manual for this tractor. She is a real beauty!! I can't wait to get her home and start working her!
Raging wrote on Friday, June 02, 2000 (PDT):Hello Everybody!! Today is a happy day - I just bought my first tractor. It is seriel number 178 844 036. I believe it is from one of the last years Oliver made 770's. She is gas, has power steering, live hydralics, and live pto and cranks out 50 hp or so. Also comes with nice Oliver loader. But I need a 3 point hitch yet. Hope to find one soon, let me know if you have any leads. I plan to use this Oliver on my 100 acre farm. Thanks!!

We live on a dairy farm & operate several tractors,the oldest being our Olivers, both were purchased by my father & grandfather. The 770 does its chores daily & we put a clutch in about every two years, recently we replaced the two speed clutches,it came standard w/ wide front end which i replaced w/ a narrow front about six years ago as it was completly wore out,this machine does not owe us anything to say the least, our 77 row crop has an f11 loader w/narrow front end and still runs great, we use it once in a while. These two machines are what i was raised on in my younger years & i will see that they get restored in the near future.I enjoy reading all the stories of these great machines, as i understand they were one of the first to have live pto & hydraulics .
Penny wrote on Tuesday, January 11, 2000 (PST):This is in response to the question from Don Goes on August 24th, regarding a whine in the rear end of a 770. If you have a torque it takes motor oil 15-40W. If you don't, it takes 90W oil. The Old Olivers have a bit of a whine anyway, don't worry about it.

It still has the original rear tires and they have well over 50% tread left. Last year I replaced several oil seals the clutch,(it was ruined by a leaking rear main seal)rebuilt the Gemmer power steering unit and repainted the entire tractor. An excellent source for parts is Farmersville Equipment in Ephrata, PA. phone 717-354-2150. They have over 200 Olivers dismantled and the parts fully cataloged. They have virtually anything you want.
