  • An answer for Rowdy McMurray, the MF 253 has 45hp at the PTO. Dig online for your manuals.

  • I live in Ireland and collect anything Massey and have the 4 MF Models, 95, 95Super, 97 and 98. The 98 is my favorite, when well loaded, purrs like a cat. Got them all in the USA since 2002 in their working clothes. Have since got all 4 restored to as new. Use the 97 to tow the 98 on A-frame to events, much faster on road. Very smart piece of kit. Best wishes to all Massey lovers.

  • The MF 98 was indeed built by Oliver for Massey. The tractor was a rebadged Oliver 990GM. They were most well known for featuring a General Government now Motors 3-71 two-cycle diesel engine with a prominent supercharger on the side. They are extremely rare and were available only from 1960 to 1962. Finding one in any condition is challenging.

  • The Mf 98 was built by Oliver for Massey, due to a disastrous fire at the Massey plant. I think they were Oliver 990 s. In reading one of the above posts, it was inferred, I believe, that Minneapolis-Moline may have supplied a model to MF also, is that correct

I also have a Model R John Deere that is about 90 % restored. Dad bought that one in 1969 and it has been in almost constant use until 3 years ago when I restored it

  • You probably had the multi power in low. You need to have it in high when going down steep hills, tractors also come equipted with brakes to slow down when on hills. It was NOT THE MASSEY'S FAULT THAT YOU DID NOT UNDERSTAND HOW TO OPERATE THE TRACTOR!!! (A Jhon Deere wouldn't even moved what ever you were pulling!)

  • If you didn't know or understand how to operate the tractor or what the levers were for, you had no business on the tractor.
Mrs Jolene Rogala wrote on Tuesday, July 20, 2004 (PDT):
  • All MASSEY FERGUSON OWNERS BEWARE! My husband purchased the MF tractor used and a particular lever unbeknown to him has to be engaged when towing a load going DOWNHILL!! The lever was not properly marked. I put the tractor in the lowest speed I could and expected to have a very slow descent down this dirt road. Well, it was as though I had the clutch pushed in; it "free wheeled" down this dirt road the weight of the 40 foot dock raised the rear end of the tractor puncturing the left rear tire of the tractor. I do NOT recall anything from here on. The tractor ran upside down until the gas and oil were gone. The piston spun in the block and the engine is virtually SHOT! It is going to cost us approx. $5,000 to rebuild the engine. It has been a year since my accident. I had broken 5 metatarsal bones, two main tendons, severed the main artery supplying blood to my foot, and there were multiple dislocations. So, if you are buying a Massey Ferguson used obtain an owners manuel so this does not happen to you. My family has suffered greatly because of this accident, which could have been prevented had the lever been properly marked. I don't have the technical term for the lever, you research it yourself. Good Luck, Mrs Jolene Rogala PS I am walking and feel blessed to be alive.

We would really like to have a sister pulling mate for our 99. Any leads or information concerning Masseys with GM powerplants would be appreciated. Thanks JK.

  • I have a MF98 that I currently use to mow with a 20 foot Woods Bat Wing mower. The MF98 which is the same as the Oliver 990 has a very interesting history. A Brazilian tractor company got the tooling and made variations of this tractor as late as the 1990's. The one question that I have never had answered is; "Why was the MF97 given the "MF97" designation when it came from the Minniapolis Moline 706, had 101 horsepower and was sold by Massey Ferguson after the MF98 (the MF98 has approximately 85 pto horsepower). I am very familiar with this tracor if anyone has any questions.
